Why did the Yulin dog festival start? According to Peter Li, the Humane Society International’s China policy expert, the festival was launched in 2009/2010 by Yulin’s dog meat traders purely as a commercial event in an attempt to boost their flagging dog meat sales.
Where does the dog festival take place? Yulin Dog Meat Festival is an annual celebration held in Yulin, Guangxi, during the summer solstice in which festival-goers eat dog meat. The festival began in 2009 and spans about ten days between June 19-30th during which it is estimated that 10,000 – 15,000 dogs are tortured and then consumed.
How are dogs killed in the meat trade? Most horrifically—due to a traditional belief that high adrenaline levels will produce tender meat and increase the supposed health benefits—dogs who are killed may be intentionally subjected to extreme fear and suffering and be killed via bludgeoning, hanging, or electrocution.
